SAFEGUARDING AND PROTECTING CHILDREN TRAINING
The standards for Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport require that individuals involved with children or with responsibilities in our sport undertake Child Protection training. The following outlines what those requirements are.
Child Protection Training & Awareness Requirements Table
The Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) advise that child protection training is updated every three years. The BCU has not made this a requirement to date as up to now there has not been a suitable course to provide this. Sports Coach UK with the CPSU have developed a new course called Safeguarding and Protecting Children 2 (SPC2) which is designed as a follow on from the first course (SPC1) . If you would like to update your training this is a good way to do this. However, it is not currently mandatory for BCU coaches and volunteers to undertake this training.
When we have a range of suitable options to provide for coaches and volunteers to update their training then we will advise of any change of requirements.
Minimum Training Requirement
The minimum requirement is a basic awarness course which can be accessed through a distance learning scheme or web based learning. The BCU has introduced a new Paddlesafe On line Child Protection Course to support individuals to meet this requirement and reduce the cost involved. See below for further details of the course and who should undertake this course. Other courses may be accepted – please refer to the Equivalent Training Guidance document SPC-G14.
Basic Safeguarding Workshops
All coaches and volunteers, paid or unpaid, who work regularly or alone with children and young people, and those with designated roles in relation to children such as Club Welfare Officers should attend a recognised Safeguarding workshop or course – with a minimum of 3 hours direct delivery. The most popular and widely delivered workshop is the sports coach UK 3 hour ‘Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport’ (SPC) course.
This workshop can be accessed through your local County Sport Partnership or from time to time Canoe England may run Paddlesport specific courses. If you need help in locating a course please contact your Paddlesport Development Officer.
Some individuals may have already attended a Safeguarding course through your local authority. Whilst this is not usually specific to sport it may be recognized as an equivalent to the SPC course. See the Equivalent Training Guidance sheet pdf for more information.
Club and Event Welfare Officers
Canoe England provides the Time to Listen workshop to support designated officers in this role. It is subsidised and supported by Canoe England and delivered by BCU /NSPCC trained tutors. To access a course please contact your Paddlesport Development Officer. To attend the course you must first have completed a basic Safeguarding course as described above.

NEW PADDLESAFE – Online Child Protection Course
This new training course provides an easy way to access the basic training requirement for volunteers, coaches and staff involved in Paddlesport but who are not working regularly or alone with children*. Avoiding the time and cost required to travel to and attend courses.
The course covers basic awareness training, explains best practice, and what to do if you have a concern regarding child protection. There are five sections – with questions at the end of each section. If you do not pass all the questions you will be directed back to the knowledge section to re enforce the key learning points.
The course takes approximately 45 minutes to complete but you can log out and back in again at any time. On successful completion of the course there is a certificate for you to download and keep.
This BCU initiated course has been produced by Child Protection experts and has been funded through grants from Sport England. This has enabled the BCU to keep the cost of the course to a minimum – to benefit our members. If you are a member of Canoe England (or other Home Nation) you will need your membership number to access the reduced fee course of £7.96. For non members the cost is £16.99.
This training course is suitable for:
*coaches who work regularly with children should attend the 3 hour Sports Coach UK Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop or equivalent (see above)
