Child Protection Training Requirements for Coaches - Update June 2011
The BCU Child Protection policy requires Coaches and Volunteers who work regularly or alone with children (Under 18) to complete the 3-hour Safeguarding and Protecting Children (SPC1) workshop or equivalent. BCU coaches Level 2 and above who do not work regularly or alone with children should complete the Paddlesafe On Line Child Protection course. This takes only 30-45 minutes and is subsidised by Canoe England costing just £7.99 for members.
Completion of the training requirement will need to be undertaken by 31/12/2011 in order to remain a current updated coach.
Coaches are encourage to undertake the required training asap and not wait until December !
The BCU are committed to ensuring that any young person participating in Paddlesport can do so free from harm of abuse and as part of this aim we have achieved the Advanced Standard for Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport. Training is a key element of the Standards and it is a requirement that all staff and volunteers are provided with opportunities to learn how to recognise and respond to concerns about child abuse.
Nb. Coaches are not required at present to update their training after 3 years. Further information about the training and how to access courses can be found here.
Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)
The BCU Disclosure policy requires all BCU Coaches and above to have an up-to-date BCU CRB enhanced disclosure before the end of December 2010. BCU CRB Disclosure is considered valid for 3 years. BCU Disclosure Policy (SPC-P4)
From 31/12/2011 all BCU Coaches are required to have BCU CRB enhanced disclosure in order to meet the Coach Update requirements. In certain situations coaches can register their CRB obtained through other channels (see SPC-G22 Portability of CRB)
