BCU AND ITT WATER AND WASTEWATER UK LTD ANNOUNCE NEW PARTNERSHIP

BRITISH CANOE UNION PRESS RELEASE

British Canoe Union and ITT Water & Wastewater UK Ltd announce environmental partnership

British Canoe Union (BCU) is pleased to announce its partnership with Nottingham-based ITT Water & Wastewater UK Ltd, the leading solutions provider within the water and wastewater market.

The two organisations will drive forward a variety of environmental and CSR projects, such as cleaning key stretches of river for the benefit of all river users including canoeists, boaters and lovers of the great outdoors.

The water environment is important to canoeists who take a great deal of pleasure in appreciating nature and natural habitats whilst enjoying the inland waterways.  Canoeists are out on the water all year round and often help the environment by reporting pollution or rescuing wildlife for the benefit of all water users.

With ITT Water & Wastewater’s support, this valuable work can be developed further and in new areas.

Paul Owen, Chief Executive of the BCU and Canoe England, comments, “We are delighted to be working collaboratively with ITT WWW and value their support which will have a direct and positive impact on key grassroot projects.”

Peter Lewington, Managing Director of ITT Water & Wastewater in the UK and Ireland, comments: “ITT WWW is proud to be working alongside the BCU, with its link to water sports in the community and environmental responsibilities, it is a perfect fit for our business, which provides products and services for moving and treating liquids.  Our dedicated team at ITT WWW is looking forward to working with the BCU on future projects.”

ITT WWW comprises four world class brands: Flygt, Sanitaire, Wedeco and Leopold.  It offers a unique range of products and services to the water and wastewater market.  ITT WWW is present in 140 countries around the world and holds 70 global patents.

The details of the partnership, including information on partnership events and which rivers will be targeted for clean-up projects will be announced in the coming weeks.

Notes to the editors:
The BCU was set up in 1936 to send a team to the Berlin Olympics and is the lead body for canoeing and kayaking in the UK. The BCU is responsible for leading and setting the overall framework for the National Associations; including representing canoeing interests through coaching, competition and campaigning for increased access to Britain’s waterways for paddlers. In the Athens Olympics, Canoeing was one of Team GB’s most successful sports with medals for Ian Wynne (Bronze), Helen Reeves (Bronze) and Campbell Walsh (Silver).
In the Beijing Olympics British Canoeing became a Gold medal winning sport, with Tim Brabants winning Gold and Bronze medal in flat water racing. In slalom David Florence won Silver. The aim for London 2012 is to win two Gold medals.

Today the BCU has a membership of over 60,000, including over 450 affiliated clubs and 145 approved centres. According to the Paddlesport Review there are an estimated 1.5 million people take to the water in a canoe each year. The vast majority do so under a watchful eye of one of the 11,000 BCU Qualified coaches or as part of an affiliated organisation.
