You may have spotted the nationwide campaign launched by Sport England
in January, which aims to get more women and girls out enjoying sport
and physical activity. The campaign is based on research undertaken by
Sport England which revealed that the overwhelming factor holding women
and girls back from exercising was fear of judgment. This included
aspects relating to appearance, ability or how they chose to spend time
on themselves.
British Canoeing is keen to support the campaign and is fully
committed to increasing the number of females participating in
Paddlesport. We’re also keen to encourage those already taking part in
the sport to get more involved by providing more opportunities and
information.
Why Get Involved with Canoeing?
The great thing about paddling is the variety it offers and there are
few sports more versatile than canoeing. It can be competitive or
recreational, a team game or an individual test of ability, a sociable
hobby or a way of discovering the peace and tranquillity of Britain’s
beautiful waterways There are lots of places across Britain to go
canoeing including swimming pools, peaceful canals, scenic lakes,
meandering rivers, white water descents and stunning coastlines – there
really is something for everyone.
Health Benefits
Canoeing is fabulous exercise, is good fun and great for building confidence and self esteem. Benefits also include:
• It’s a low impact activity that can improve your cardiovascular ability, muscle strength and flexibility
• Even the most leisurely paddle will give you a good aerobic workout
• It can help increase relaxation and reduce stress
Is it for me?
Canoeing is for people of all ages and abilities and many clubs and
centres cater for people with disabilities making canoeing an accessible
pastime for everyone.
Visiting a club or approved centre is sociable, safe and will help you
to master the basic skills more quickly in a group environment. Clubs
and centres welcome new faces and many run special sessions for
newcomers. To find a club or centre near you click here.
